"Dr. Phil" House Shut Down By Angry Residents

"Dr. Phil" has had to shut down production at a location for a popular segment of the show, after angry neighbors waged a revolt. It seems the cocaine addicts and others who were holed up in the house didn't go over too well with residents on the block.

Every Monday, "Dr. Phil" features guests who live together for a week in the "Dr. Phil House," a home located in the mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles. Peteski Productions, Dr. Phil's production company, purchased the residence last June. The inside was gutted and remodeled with the help of Phil's wife, Robin. We're told 45 cameras were installed in the home, and a brain center was built in the pool house, dubbed "video village." Miles of wires were run throughout the inside and outside of the house, much to the dismay of complaining neighbors.

But neighbors say the unsightly wires were nothing compared to the nonstop noise and ear-shattering arguing coming from addicts, racists, misfits and others who populated the house. Tom Griep, who lives next door, told TMZ he was none too happy when "two crack cocaine addicts were yelling at each other for all to hear."

Griep adds "Dr. Phil" violated the city's ground rules by taping past midnight many nights and starting up again before 7AM. Griep says some of the production staff were rude and uncooperative. He also claims the staff cut his hedge down. Griep and other neighbors allege the show constantly violated parking restrictions on the street and created an extreme eyesore with cables and all. Neighbors also claim the low-life clientele in the house caused several disturbances.

Neighborhood residents contacted the LAPD and other agencies on a regular basis, complaining that the show was turning their lives upside down. As Steven and Susan Jamerson put it, "Our once-peaceful neighborhood has now turned into a studio backlot." Griep says a production executive told him the taping would continue for several years.

Seventy-six residents signed a petition protesting the production and after a meeting last month with city officials, production was shut down. FilmL.A., the agency that processes permits for shooting TV shows and movies, has been instructed by city officials not to issue future permits for the house in question.

City officials tell TMZ the show had requested eight additional shoots, each lasting between five and nine days, but the request was rejected. An official for FilmL.A. tells TMZ that "Dr. Phil" was trying to turn the house into a studio, and that violates the city's zoning laws.

In a statement to TMZ, a rep from "Dr. Phil" said, "Our primary objective has always been to be extremely respectful of the neighbors and we have accommodated their requests whenever they have arisen." The spokesman says the show has received a lot of neighborhood support.

The spokesman adds that production vehicles did not park on the street and taping was limited to inside the house.

31. Cheers to Dr. Phil and his beautiful wife Robin,
Where are we more real than at home. Dr. Phils house is a great idea.
He is America's Therapist. If you have watched him for any length of time you would see. He is the only talk show host in the history of talk shows who on a regular basis gets to the heart of problems of society. I applaud him for this.
Thank you Dr. Phil!!!

32. I am sure that the production co. respected the wishes of the neighbors and didn't tape before or after hours. Yeah, right. Dr. Phil should have rented a house away from civilization with the mix of people he had living there. And how could he and Robin be so happy and proud that his son married a female who posed naked with her sisters in Playboy? How could his son be proud to be with someone who has no boundries and scarce moral values. I mean who goes naked with their sisters? That's wrong, who shows all their privates to anyone who buys a magazine? That's his son's wife? I would be mortified if my son married someone who will do practically anything for money. I wonder what her next step was if the naked magazine deal didn't work out? How low can you go? I would have thought they would have raised their son better. What are they going to tell their kids when someone shows them a photo of their mom posing naked with her two other sisters? Hey folks, kids are disgusted when you can't act with decency and I am too.

33. I am concerned about the exploitation of the children and human beings who are are featured in this show. People in need, may not be fully aware of the consequences for signing on to such an invasion of privacy, regardless of getting money from the Dr. Phil show. Where does help, become exploitation in the name of help? The children seem like pawns caught up in adult motives. I am concerned about the long term, negative effects of statements and actions that are permanently saved and aired to the nation on these people and their children. Do they have legal recourse not to be involved?

34. Now that Dr.Phil's house has been shut down, The Maven thinks it's time Dr. Phil himself was shut down. This guy is, simply stated, a fraudulent, bull-sh*tting scam artist, and those of you commentators who think he's so wonderful should really seek psychiatric intevention. Only a miserable slob like Oprah could have come up with this ugly turd, and turn it loose on the world.

35. Personally I feel it's a form of discrimination, I just wonder, if Ophra opened the exact same type of home, would all be so quick to critize I seriously doubt it. I bet half those families that worry about cocaine addicts living next door aren't even aware of who among their friends or friends' family are just that.

I agree noise should be put to a livable level I have no doubt that that disturbs the residents. Just ask yourselves people is it really the fact of noise or the people or you just want some of the lime light? If he gets the noise to stop would you still feel same way.

36. Hello,
You people who seemingly hate Dr. Phil are all wrong. I think it is just a matter of pure jealousy that you spout your hatred towards a man, through no fault of his own, has skyrocketed to popularity seemingly overnight, just as Oprah did. Sure they are making big bucks. Wouldn't you too, if given the opportunity?? Come on people, get real. Dr. Phil speaks common sense, like most of us should know and practice, but we don't. Dr. Phil just makes us see things from a different perspective. Love ya Dr. Phil. Keep up the good works, and "hi" to Oprah for me.

37. Well, as America sinks deeper into a lathargic abyss prompted by these so called "Reality" shows, it was only a matter of time before this "Dr" (sarcastic quotes intentional) jumped on the money making band wagon. Most of the comments above are true; "Dr" Phil is a greedy, unscrupulous person, seeking only fortune. I too wonder why, if his "caring" is so real, why he didn't locate this sham on his own property, in his neighborhood. Or better still, invite them to live and breath within his own home. Meth freaks and crack addicts can put on a facade for only a short while, then their true infectious selves come out.

38. I haven't had any pop-up ads.

39. Seriously, all Dr. Phil does is state the obvious to these quaks.

Like, he'll have overweight people on his show and tell them they are overweight and need to lose weight...well, no sh*t.

Or he'll have married couples on who don't communicate with each other and it causes problems and he'll say something along the lines of having to open up lines of communication...again, way to use your noodle Dr. Phil.

Yet people continue to watch his show or worse yet they continue to go on his show and whine about their problems and have him tell them something that their best friend could have told them in the privacy of their own home.

It's ridiculious!

40. I have always thought of so-called "Dr. Phil" as being a total a**hole along with the people who enable him to exist. Get rid of him now.

41. I think all of you people should be ashamed of what you are saying. First of all Dr Phil is nothing like the crap that goes on like Jerry Springer! Dr Phil deals with real life issues and doesn't flaunt it just to make money. He and his wife are in this to help people! Secondly you people don't know what really goes on because you live in a perfect little world where nothing bad ever happens! Wake up and smell the roses, your not so perfect yourself and if you seem to hate what Dr Phil is trying to do then why don't you just go start your own show and see if you can do anything for these people! I think Dr Phil and his wife and his show deserve alot of credit, the man takes so much criticiizim but yet he's there to help you and help your family in any way possible! I commend him on a job well done and its a shame that people have to be so hateful and inconsiderate when it comes to a person just trying to what's right and good for those of us who need a little fixing!

42. Dr. Phil doesn't hesitate to expose other peoples family problems. I would like to know why Robin left him and how he solved that problem and got her back Could it be success and $$$$$$.?

Posted at 5:43PM on Oct 10th 2006 by john sheerin

43. Dr. Phil has the solution for many of our country's problems. It is just that no one wants to hear it who needs to hear it and abide by it. What he says is the real deal and most people want a quick, painless solution to their biggest problems.
This doesn't exist. No pain, no gain. It is hard to do the right thing all the time.
We have a tendency to be jealous of people who make it but we would really like to make it ourselves so all this bashing of Dr. Phil is really just jealousy.

45. I wonder how many of you people would be so vicious in your comments about people you don't even know if you couldn't hide behind the anonymity offered by these postings. What sad and pathetic souls you are to be so full of hate for your fellow human beings.
